Friends brace for big farewell for bilbies’ gentle champion

Zoologist Peter McCrae pioneered breeding bilbies in captivity.

PETER MCRAE’S work colleagues commissioned a surprise gift to be presented at the fur ball last Saturday, the eve of the 13th national bilby day. It was a chrome sculpture, made from moulded spoons, of the long-eared marsupial with which he was so closely identified.
